Waiters and waitresses can obtain a hospitality service certificate through community colleges and trade schools. While this certificate is rarely required, it can give job seekers an advantage in the market. Programs typically last about 36 credit hours. The programs focus on topics such as customer service, dietary training, sanitation, knowledge of spirits, and beer and wine service.
Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), most waiters and waitresses are trained to work (www, bls, gov). There are no formal educational requirements to work as a waiter or waitress. However, some employers are looking for a high school diploma. Many food service employees, including waitresses and waiters, have no post-secondary education and have very little or no work experience.
Students and others seeking a part-time income often hold positions in industry. They were supposed to train me for a month, but they only trained me for a week and then I was alone. The longest training period I've ever heard of was two weeks at most (for an extremely high-end position) and the sudden change in training duration is more than suspicious. However, training is most commonly provided by employers, including classroom and on-the-job training.
